The Rookie: Why sports are importaint
Set in a lethal pro football league 700 years in the future, this galaxy-spanning story combines the intense gridiron action of "any given Sunday" with the space-opera style of "Star wars" and the criminal underworld of the "the Godfather."
Follow the story of Quentin Barnes, a 19-year-old Quarterback prodigy that has been raised all his life to hate those aliens. Quentin must deal with his racism and learn to lead, or he'll wind up just another stat in the column marked "killed on the field."
So why is Gridiron so important in the Scott Sigler universe? well up to the near past the different races were at war with each other till a bat like creature called the Creterakians took over all the races and sub-races of the world, except the Quyth Concordia. All the races still hate each other having been involved in wars for the last century and at least two of the races were known to eat the others. So how do they intend to keep the peace through the galaxy? Foot ball.
Just as sports in the real world have broken the race barrier with great success before other areas of life. Sports give an out let for aggressive tendancies and can give a mock war environment. there is a winner and a looser and it is based on physical ability, something that can not be deigned. Sports give an opportunity to get out pent up aggression. it is a place where the out come is depended on the people involved. the rules are clear and when it comes down to it it is pure muscle power against muscle power.
there is something pure about the combat on the field whether it is baseball, football, or basket ball or any other game. the rest of the world doesn't matter. Football in the purity of sport can break down barriers between people and let out aggression in a 'safe' environment.
